Attention Star Wars fans! On September 30, 2010, there can be a new addition to your collection of light saber chopsticks, your Yoda backpacks and Han Solo carbonite soaps… lo and behold the special edition Motorola Droid 2 R2-D2 Star Wars edition Android smartphone! This phone will have the same features and functions as the Motorola Droid 2 such as a 1GHZ processor with Android 2.2 operating system, touch screen, full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities and expandable memory up to 40GB in addition to “exclusive Star Wars content” and an exterior “designed to look like the trusty Droid from the film saga.” To the extent of public knowledge, the “exclusive” content includes special Star Wars themed apps and widgets, wallpapers and a special R2D2 interface.
Not much information regarding the special edition R2D2 phone has been released by Motorola, as it is up to the fans to unlock “plans” of the special edition Droid2 phone, which have been “intercepted by agents of the Empire and scattered across the internet.” Fans are required to scour the web for clues on the web to recover the “lost schematics” of the special edition phone via Twitter instructions. There are a total of eight pieces to the website that need to be recovered before anyone can learn more about the new phone. So far, half of the schematics have been recovered, but the boot up sequence, R2-D2 soundboard, enhancescan app and exclusive video have yet to be unlocked by fans. For each fan who unlocks a piece of the website, he or she will be rewarded with a R2-D2 Droid2 smartphone. We look forward to the release of this special edition Droid2 phone, as it is the ultimate Star Wars fan’s nerdy fantasy to be one with the Rebel Alliance because “without the Droid R2-D2 device, Earth will be completely cut off from the Alliance communication network.” We wouldn’t want to end up like AT&T with their iphone reception now, would we? If you wish to join the 25,800+ Rebels hunting for the lost plans, you can view the rules here and may the Force be with you.
